PART 3

Forms, Dosage, Timing & How to Find What Works for You

In Part 2 of our Magnesium series, we explored the different forms of magnesium and why the compound attached to magnesium matters.

But understanding the names on the label is only the beginning.

Magnesium glycinate or citrate? Malate or taurate? What about L-threonate? How much should you actually take? Does timing matter? And can different forms be combined?

The answer begins with one simple principle:

There is no single “best” magnesium for everyone.

The right choice depends on why you are taking it, how well you tolerate it, your diet, your health, and — importantly — how much elemental magnesium the product actually provides.

So let’s turn the theory into something practical.

Start with the reason, not the bottle

Imagine standing in front of a shelf of magnesium supplements. One promises relaxation, another energy, another muscle support, and a fourth seems to be designed almost exclusively for the brain.

It is tempting to ask which one is the best.

But that is probably the wrong question.

A much more useful question is:

What do I want magnesium to support?

If relaxation, sleep and a calmer evening are your priorities, magnesium glycinate (or bisglycinate) is often a practical place to start. It is generally well tolerated and tends to be gentler on the digestive system than forms with a stronger laxative effect, which is one reason many people prefer it in the evening.

If constipation is part of the picture, however, magnesium citrate may make more sense. It is readily absorbed, but it can also draw water into the bowel. For one person that may be exactly what is needed; for another, particularly someone already prone to loose stools, it may be the wrong choice.

Then there is magnesium malate, where magnesium is combined with malic acid — a compound involved in cellular energy metabolism. This is why malate is often considered when muscle function, physical activity and daytime support are priorities, and why it may feel more natural to take it earlier in the day.

Magnesium taurate combines magnesium with taurine and is often considered when cardiovascular and nervous-system support are of particular interest.

And magnesium L-threonate occupies its own rather fascinating corner of the magnesium world. It has attracted attention because of research into magnesium levels in the brain and cognitive function. But it is also considerably more expensive and usually provides relatively little elemental magnesium. In other words, it is an interesting specialised form — not automatically a “better” magnesium for everybody.

And what about the inexpensive bottle of magnesium oxide sitting on almost every supplement shelf?

It is not something we need to demonise. It contains a high proportion of magnesium by weight and can be useful when a laxative effect is wanted. But it is generally less bioavailable than several other forms. Once again, the lesson is the same:

A magnesium form is only “good” when it makes sense for the person taking it.

The number on the front of the bottle can be misleading

Here is where supplement labels can become unnecessarily confusing.

You pick up a bottle and see:

Magnesium Glycinate — 1,000 mg

It sounds impressive.

But this does not necessarily mean that you are getting 1,000 mg of magnesium.

Magnesium in a supplement is attached to another compound. That large number may refer to the weight of the whole compound — magnesium plus glycinate — rather than the amount of magnesium itself.

The number you actually want to find is:

Elemental magnesium.

That tells you how much actual magnesium the serving provides.

This is one of the simplest habits I encourage when choosing supplements: turn the bottle around.

The biggest number on the front is not always the most useful one.

So how much do we actually need?

Magnesium requirements are not based on supplements alone. They include the magnesium we obtain naturally from food.

For adults in the UK, the Reference Nutrient Intake is around 270 mg per day for women and 300 mg per day for men.

And this is where I think magnesium becomes much more interesting than simply choosing a capsule.

Pumpkin seeds, nuts, leafy green vegetables, legumes, whole grains, avocado and cacao can all contribute meaningful amounts of magnesium. They also bring fibre, healthy fats, protein, vitamins, minerals and numerous other compounds with them.

So supplementation should never make us forget the plate.

At Vita Magna, I prefer to think of supplements as exactly that — something that supplements a good nutritional foundation rather than replacing it.

When a supplement is useful, more is not automatically better. Higher amounts of supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhoea, cramping and digestive discomfort, and tolerance varies considerably between people and between different forms.

This is why I prefer an individual approach rather than chasing the largest possible dose on a label.

Does magnesium have to be taken at night?

No.

This is another little rule that has somehow become almost universal online: magnesium equals bedtime.

Sometimes that makes perfect sense. If you are using glycinate primarily for relaxation, an evening dose may fit beautifully into your routine.

But if you are using malate as part of a daytime strategy, morning or early afternoon may make more sense. If magnesium irritates your stomach, taking it with food may be more comfortable. And if one larger dose does not agree with you, dividing the amount across the day can sometimes be easier to tolerate.

There is no prize for taking magnesium at exactly 9:17 pm.

The best timing is the timing that fits the purpose, the form and the person — and that you can follow consistently.

Can different forms be combined?

They can.

You might, for example, choose one form during the day and another in the evening because they serve different purposes within your routine.

But this is where another common mistake appears.

If you take two magnesium products, you need to add together the elemental magnesium from both. The body does not care that one bottle says glycinate and the other says malate — it still receives magnesium from both.

Taking more forms does not automatically make a protocol more sophisticated.

Sometimes the simplest programme is the best one.

One final consideration: magnesium does not exist in isolation

Even something as familiar as magnesium deserves a little respect.

People with significant kidney impairment need particular caution because the kidneys play an essential role in removing excess magnesium from the body. Magnesium supplements can also interfere with the absorption of certain medicines when taken too close together.

So if you take regular medication, have kidney disease, are pregnant, or have a significant medical condition, supplementation should be discussed with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

“Natural” and “available without prescription” do not mean “appropriate for everyone”.

And perhaps this is the real lesson of magnesium

Over these three articles, we have moved from understanding why magnesium matters, to discovering why there are so many different forms, and finally to the question that matters in everyday life:

Which one should I choose?

And perhaps the answer is simpler than the supplement industry sometimes makes it appear.

Do not begin with the trendiest form.

Begin with you.

What are you trying to support?
What does your diet already provide?
How does your digestive system respond?
How much elemental magnesium are you actually taking?
And is there a genuine reason to supplement in the first place?

Then choose the form that fits that picture.

And before reaching automatically for another bottle, look at your plate.

A handful of pumpkin seeds, some leafy greens, avocado, nuts or cacao may not look as sophisticated as the latest supplement formula — but nutrition was never meant to come only from capsules.
