HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FORM
In Part 1, we explored the quiet yet essential work magnesium performs throughout the body — supporting energy production, the nervous system, muscles, the heart, bones, and hundreds of biochemical reactions.
This naturally leads us to the next question:
If magnesium is so important, which form should we choose?
Citrate, glycinate, malate, taurate, oxide, chloride… Supplement labels can make the choice seem far more complicated than it needs to be. Each form consists of magnesium bound to another substance, and this combination can influence its solubility, absorption, digestive effects, and intended use.
Let us sort through the options calmly — without getting lost in marketing promises.
🔹 MAGNESIUM CITRATE
Magnesium citrate is a well-known, soluble form that is generally absorbed more efficiently than magnesium oxide.
It may be suitable for:
• general magnesium supplementation;
• people who also need support with occasional constipation.
Because magnesium citrate draws water into the bowel, it may loosen the stool. In larger amounts, it can cause diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, or cramping.
🔹 MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE OR BISGLYCINATE
In this form, magnesium is bound to glycine, an amino acid.
Magnesium glycinate is often chosen by people with sensitive digestion because it may be gentler on the bowel than forms with a stronger laxative effect.
It is frequently recommended as the best magnesium for sleep, relaxation, stress, and anxiety. Glycine itself has biological functions. It can still be a practical option when it is well tolerated and provides an appropriate amount of elemental magnesium.
🔹 MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE
Magnesium chloride dissolves readily and is considered a relatively well-absorbed form.
It may be used for general magnesium supplementation, although it can cause loose stools or digestive discomfort in some people.
Magnesium oils, sprays, and bath products often contain magnesium chloride. They may feel soothing when applied to the skin, but evidence that meaningful amounts of magnesium are absorbed through healthy, intact skin remains limited. Oral magnesium has been studied far more extensively.
🔹 MAGNESIUM LACTATE
Magnesium lactate is another soluble form with relatively good absorption.
It may be suitable for people who require magnesium supplementation and tolerate this form well. As with every magnesium product, the amount of elemental magnesium matters more than the impressive-looking weight of the entire compound.
Magnesium lactate should not be confused with lactose. They are different substances.
🔹 MAGNESIUM ASPARTATE
Magnesium aspartate is generally considered a soluble and relatively well-absorbed form.
It can be used as a source of magnesium, but claims that it provides unique benefits for energy, athletic performance, or fatigue are not firmly established.
Magnesium aspartate is not the same substance as the artificial sweetener aspartame.
🔹 MAGNESIUM OXIDE
Magnesium oxide contains a relatively high proportion of elemental magnesium by weight, which can make the number displayed on the packaging look impressive.
However, it is less soluble and generally less readily absorbed than citrate, chloride, lactate, and aspartate. The unabsorbed portion remains in the bowel, where it attracts water and may produce a laxative effect.
Magnesium oxide is therefore often found in products intended to relieve constipation or indigestion.
A larger number on the label does not necessarily mean that the body will absorb more magnesium.
🔹 MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE
Magnesium hydroxide is commonly known as milk of magnesia.
It is primarily used as:
• a laxative;
• an antacid for occasional heartburn or indigestion.
It should not automatically be treated as an everyday wellness supplement. Its purpose, dosage, and possible interactions need to be considered carefully.
🔹 MAGNESIUM MALATE
This form combines magnesium with malic acid, a substance involved in cellular energy production.
Magnesium malate is often marketed for energy, muscle discomfort, or chronic fatigue. Although it can provide magnesium, there is not yet enough strong clinical evidence to confirm that it offers special benefits for these conditions compared with other suitable forms.
🔹 MAGNESIUM TAURATE
Magnesium taurate combines magnesium with the amino acid taurine.
It is frequently promoted as a particularly “heart-friendly” form. Both magnesium and taurine are involved in normal cardiovascular function, but research is currently insufficient to establish that magnesium taurate protects the heart or lowers blood pressure more effectively than other magnesium forms.
It should never replace prescribed cardiovascular treatment.
🔹 MAGNESIUM L-THREONATE
Magnesium L-threonate is usually marketed for memory, concentration, and brain health.
Early research has generated interest, but the evidence remains limited.
It is also often considerably more expensive than other forms. A higher price does not automatically mean a greater benefit.
🔹 MAGNESIUM CARBONATE
Magnesium carbonate is used in certain supplements, antacids, and laxative products.
It can provide magnesium, but it may also cause loose stools, abdominal cramping, or digestive discomfort. Its effect partly depends on the dosage and the formulation of the product.
🔹 MAGNESIUM SULPHATE
Magnesium sulphate is commonly known as Epsom salt.
In medical settings, it may be administered for specific clinical indications, sometimes intravenously. Intravenous magnesium is a medical treatment and must only be given under professional supervision!
Epsom salt baths can be a wonderfully soothing ritual, helping the body relax and unwind. Their potential contribution to magnesium absorption through the skin continues to be studied, while their calming warmth and restorative effect can still make them a valuable part of a self-care routine.
A FINAL THOUGHT
Each form of magnesium has its own characteristics. Some dissolve and absorb more readily, some are gentler on digestion, while others are primarily used for their laxative or antacid effects.
However, a fashionable name or a higher price does not automatically make one form better than another. The right choice depends on your individual needs, the amount of elemental magnesium, digestive tolerance, existing health conditions, and any medicines you may be taking.
